WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY STUDENT HOUSING

In higher education, housing plays an integral role in shaping the student experience – an aspect that is often linked to both the success of the learner, and the reputation of the institution. As part of a multi-phase campus housing renovation plan, University Student Housing at West Chester University selected TONO Architects to reimagine two shared dormitory kitchen spaces. With expertise in designing educational facilities, the turnkey architectural firm provided strategic spatial planning, interior design material and furnishing selections to create dynamic and inclusive environments within the existing square footage of each room.

TONO was tasked with rethinking the layout of each 400-square-foot space to increase functionality while considering modern design trends that would appeal to the university’s student body. The client envisioned a space that would be colorful but not overdesigned and requested to omit the use of tile.

OUR APPROACH

Pulling from the client’s ideation, TONO developed a soft palette of creams, greens, teals, brass, and woodgrain juxtaposed by an undercurrent of Mid-Century Modern influence. An intentional layout enabled the retention of most plumbing, lighting, and HVAC infrastructure allowing TONO to meet the demands of the university’s compressed timeline. Laminate cabinets and appliances were specified to maximize workflows and ensure an inclusive environment with ADA compliance. Vinyl wallcoverings added a unique design element with enhanced durability. Ample counter space and seating options further optimize the functionality within the two kitchens while providing multiple opportunities for students to gather and interact.

OUTCOME

Throughout the project, TONO Architects worked strategically to ensure every square foot was maximized while considering the long-term durability and maintenance requirements of the high-traffic environment. The result is a modern space that will appeal to incoming students for years to come.
